 I spoke to Shirai this morning at 2 am.  His English was
 better than expected but the phone line was worse.  I outlined
 the situation rapidly, and as expected, he was aprehensive about
 getting involved without knowing a lot more and having time to 
 reflect etc.  He was willing to be included in counts as with the
 majority, bu he was unwilling to be cited by name either explicitly
 or implicitly (as by citing unaminous agreement).  He sends his
 regards.
